Rubik's Cube

The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D combination puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Erno Rubik. Originally called the Magic Cube, the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp. in 1980 via businessman Tibor Laczi and Seven Towns founder Tom Kremer.

The Rubik's cube is a Permutation group in Mathematics. It has 6 different colors each repeated 9 times. When in solved position all the 9 squares of the same colors are on the same side. Let's unwrap the cube to a 2-D T shape and number 1-54 in a particular order as shown.

Now let's define 12 basic operations in the Rubik's:

The properties of the mathematic structure:

Associate

Neutral Element

Inverse Element

Commutative

Degree of Permutations

Based on this the possibilities we can say that the total number of possibilities are:

Yup! You saw that right it's 43 quintillion, 252 quadrillion, 3 trillion, 274 billion, 489 million, 856 thousand.

To visualize this if we consider the Rubik's cube as 6km wide cube and if we place the cube next to each other then we would cover the Sun's circumference 300 Trillion times.
